International Internship for SIIL Students in Collaboration with CERN

The Swiss International Institute Lausanne, in collaboration with the CLEAR team at CERN, is implementing a research program for students in the fields of information technology and applied accelerator physics.

CERN is the largest international research center in Switzerland, where cutting-edge technologies are developed in the fields of science, engineering, data analysis, and programming. The program allows SIIL students to gain practical experience in an international research environment while still in school.

The internship is conducted entirely online. Students work on real-world research problems, collaborate with research advisors, and receive regular feedback as part of ongoing projects.

One of the program participants was Anna, a student in the “Information Systems and Technologies” program, who completed an internship as part of a research project related to the CLEAR experiment and the application of machine learning methods.

During her internship, Anna worked on refining and optimizing existing code, developing new features, and improving the system’s algorithms. In addition, she independently developed a graphical user interface—from designing its structure and layout to integrating it with the project’s software component.

The internship was structured as real-world engineering and research work: the student was assigned long-term tasks, received regular feedback, and worked in constant communication with her research advisor.

Alexander Malyzhenkov, who heads the SIIL research program in accelerator physics, oversees the program's scientific direction.

Student selection takes place through in-person interviews. Candidates are evaluated on their basic programming skills, understanding of coding principles, readiness to work independently, and engagement in the research process.

Internships at SIIL are tailored to each student—depending on their field of study, academic level, and research goals. In addition to participating in partner programs, students can also propose their own initiatives and projects for further academic and practical development.
