Update on SIIL's Research Activities

Since early 2025, the Swiss International Institute Lausanne (SIIL) has been actively developing its research program. The institute is expanding its capabilities and moving beyond its role as an educational institution to become a full-fledged research institute.

One of the program’s focuses is on involving SIIL students in research activities at leading scientific centers and universities around the world, such as CERN, PSI, EPFL, ETH, and others—both in Switzerland and abroad. SIIL staff actively participate in research and development work as part of internal projects and as consultants for external companies and organizations.

Available Medical Accelerators and the FLASH Effect

In 2025, SIIL is participating in the development of future, affordable medical accelerators for radiation therapy and is exploring the potential of the FLASH effect. This technology could revolutionize the field of radiation therapy by providing effective cancer treatment using affordable solutions and making such methods more widely available around the world.

SIIL’s Director of Scientific Research, Alexander Malyzhenkov, PhD (Dr. Alexander Malyzhenkov), an expert in beam dynamics in linear electron accelerators, leads project-based research in collaboration with international partners. In the near future, there are plans to build several state-of-the-art medical facilities in Switzerland and France capable of delivering ultra-high dose rates using VHEE (Very High Energy Electron) beams.

New Physics Curriculum

In addition to its current research initiatives, SIIL is preparing to expand its educational activities and will soon introduce a new physics program. An important part of this new academic initiative will be training a new generation of accelerator physicists, engineers, and operators—specialists who are in high demand due to the growing number of medical facilities using accelerator technologies.
